Nico and Nero aren’t the only ones to engage in biting banter. The granddaughter of legendary gunsmith Nell Goldstein, Nico displays the same sass to Nero that her grandmother once exhibited to a younger Dante back when the latter used to gallivant around as “Tony Redgrave.” Just like Nell used to give Dante grief in the past for constantly breaking his guns Nico constantly harps on Nero for mishandling her beloved creations, giving the young devil hunter the equivalent of a “git gud” put down every time the latter complains about the mechanical arms breaking on the field.

This is exhibited in full display during his interactions with his new partner in crime, Nico. But he’s also softened his rough edges a lot, exhibiting a demeanor that’s a bit more relaxed and also more fun. Yes, he's still occasionally prone to having emotional outbursts compared to the laid-back Dante. I pretty much saw the guy as a Dante “Lite” who was less fun, more gloomy and a bit of a, well, something that rhymes with the word “brick.” In Devil May Cry 5, however, I found myself really liking the guy. Now I’ll admit, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Nero in the past. Then there’s mysterious client “V,” a frail-looking human who has the ability to summon demons to fight for him. There’s Nico Goldstein, a smart alec mechanical genius who builds Nero’s Devil Breakers and operates what has to be the sturdiest van in human history, the Minotaurus. The other involves new additions to the crew. One is the Devil Breaker, a weapon that allows him to use various mechanical arms. Fortunately, Nero also gains a couple of things to help him in DMC5. Apparently, Nero lost his right hand and the Yamato sword to a mysterious foe, robbing him of his ability to fully make use of his powerful demon abilities. You start out as devil hunter Nero, who returns with a shorter head of hair and an even shorter right arm for good measure. From its campy approach to its dialogue and cutscenes to its high-octane action mechanics, the series’ DNA is deeply embedded into DMC5.

All in all, this is easily the best looking game in the series to date.ĭespite the change, however, it doesn’t take long to realize that DMC 5 remains a Devil May Cry game. Instead, you have a beefed-up level of realism, which can be seen in the characters’ more detailed flesh tones and facial bone structures.

Gone is the classic look that seems like a cross between traditional 3D and stylized anime. For starters, DMC5 leverages Capcom’s new RE engine to adopt a more realistic visual style - something that is especially evident in the character’s faces. Granted, Devil May Cry 5 doesn’t like your typical entry in the series at first glance.

It’s also symbolic how it decided to bring back the confident and brash iteration of Dante's merry posse, almost as if it’s signaling that the old Capcom has finally returned once again. Given its success in recent years, it’s only fitting that the latest entry in Capcom’s library is another beloved and time-tested property. It’s just nice to play games that don't gate all unlockables behind a ridiculous paywall. Yes, games like Monster Hunter World had microtransactions but they were of the reasonable kind. The fact that Capcom did so without resorting to any of the blatant cash grab antics that have sullied the industry in recent times makes it more remarkable. After pumping out several ambitious and well-received releases recently, the company appears to have regained its swagger. It just seemed that as first-person shooters ascended to claim a stranglehold on the industry and traditional genres receded into the background, Capcom became unsure about what it wanted to do and didn't have as much confidence in its own storied portfolio. Admittedly, Dragon’s Dogma was a blast but that game and Monster Hunter seemed more like the exceptions than the rule at the time. Even the decision to abandon the admittedly rough yet promising foundation set by Lost Planet 2 - a game I considered terribly underrated - and outsource Lost Planet 3 was something I found saddening. The decision to cancel Mega Man Legends 3, for example, was quite saddening, given how much I adored the first two games as well as The Misadventures of Tron Bonne. I loved Capcom growing up thanks to a steady stream of memorable IPs that include time-tested classics such as Mega Man and Street Fighter as well as quirky entries such as Rival Schools, Power Stone and Tech Romancer.Īll that being said, this is also the same company that broke my heart a few times. And now here comes Devil May Cry 5 to complete the cycle.ĭespite the good vibes from the DMC5 preview videos and developer interviews I’ve seen, I still had a faint ember of skepticism lingering in my soul about the game.

Every single one has been a bonafide hit and deservedly so.
